With two rounds gone by in NCAA's March Madness basketball tournament, the final sixteen teams have been decided. I think it might be fun to have a predictions contest for the remainder of the tournament. Whether you want to spend a minute and pick winners based on name, area of the country, uniform colours or rankings, or spend more time doing research before you make your picks is up to you! Personally, I'm mostly in the former category, heh.

Participants can access this Google Sheets collaborative document and fill out an unused sheet (tabs are at the bottom) with their picks, starting with the eight teams to move on to the next round. Picks should be finalized by 6pm EST on March 23rd – the sheet will be locked to view-only after that, as the first game of the next round starts an hour later!

Each participant will receive 2 Clan Points, and the overall winner will earn an extra 5 Clan Points and some bad artwork of themselves playing basketball. In addition, I personally challenge all participants to beat my final score – any who do will be paid out 500 coins from my stash! But if I beat you, you must agree to send me 50 coins. xD Those who accept my challenge should say so in this thread. Participants are welcome to use this thread to make other side bets with each other throughout the tournament as well.

Scoring will be as follows:

1 point per correct pick to advance to Elite Eight
2 points per correct pick to advance to Final Four
3 4 points per correct pick to advance to the championship game
4 8 points for the correct pick of tournament champion
1.5x multiplier to any of the above points for correctly picking a lower seed to beat a higher one

Good luck, and have fun!

Final Results:
Sweet Sixteen
Oregon 69 > Michigan 68 (1 point to everyone)
Gonzaga 61 > W. Virginia 58 (1 point to everyone)
Kansas 98 > Purdue 66 (1 point to everyone)
Xavier 73 > Arizona 71 (1.5 points to Kiri)
Florida 84 > Wisconsin 83 (OT) (1 point to Patsy and Ig)
S. Carolina 70 > Baylor 50 (1.5 points to Patsy and Ig)
Kentucky 86 > UCLA 75 (1 point to Kiri)
UNC 92 > Butler 80 (1 point to everyone)

Elite Eight
Gonzaga 83 > Xavier 59 (2 points to Kiri and Patsy)
Oregon 74 > Kansas 60 (3 points to Patsy)
S. Carolina 77 > Florida 70 (no points for anyone)
UNC 75 > Kentucky 73 (2 points to Ig, Patsy and Umbra)

Final Four
Gonzaga 77 > S. Carolina 73 (4 points to Patsy)
UNC 77 > Oregon 76 (4 points to Umbra)

Championship
UNC 71 > Gonzaga 65 (8 points to Umbra)

Final Standings:
1st - Umbra_Clan - 18
2nd - Patsy Dragon - 17.5
3rd - Ignatius - 8.5 (tie broken with championship score prediction)
4th - Kirigishi - 8.5

Ha, you had a lot of fun with this, didn't you?

Alright, I submitted my predictions. Definitely performed no research whatsoever. This should be interesting...

I did! Spreadsheets are fun, and single-elimination tournaments are exciting. x)

I might reconsider my pick of UNC winning it all though; I drew up most of my picks a couple of days ago (before I had even seen them play, lol), and the Heels didn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence in their game against Arkansas yesterday, and it seems likely that every opponent UNC would have to go through for the title would be at least four seeds higher than Arkansas. Which is not to say that they played terrible; Arkansas seemed to play very well, and had effective counters against UNC. But maybe I'll re-book and pick Kansas?

Thursday, March 23rd at 6pm EST is the new pick deadline, as the first game starts an hour or so after that. I guess the info I was looking at originally wasn't correct. ^^;

The picking phase is over! We have four participants, and four different picks for champion, each of which are the higher seed in their Sweet Sixteen matchup on the Midwest / South side of the tournament bracket - Kansas, Oregon, UNC and Kentucky. This means we could easily have some interesting showdowns in the Elite Eight round, and that at least two of us will have our top picks knocked out before the Final Four. :o Should be interesting!

I'm kind of disappointed that nobody's accepted my challenge for coins, though. Q.Q

Kiri doing no research and leading the bracket challenge is the most "bracket challenge" thing ever.

There's always that one lady in accounting that makes a bracket for the office group and wins despite thinking Xavier is the school for mutants from X-Men

It won't last, but only because I'm changing the scoring rules to make them more sensible, haha. Otherwise, it would last - you did so well in the earlier rounds that nobody could beat you at this point, heh.

Kiri, Umbra and myself only correctly predicted one of the Final Four teams. Kiri and I didn't pick that team to advance to the finals, so we can't get any more points. And unfortunately, even if Umbra got every remaining possible pick correct (i.e UNC wins the title), that will still put him half a point short of your current score using the current system. ^^;

In hindsight, the scoring system should have given heavier weight to later rounds than it does. As is, predicting the Elite Eight gave ~8 points, Final Four ~8 points, finals ~6 points, and champion ~4 points. That doesn't reallllly make sense, especially since the later rounds are especially hard to predict because you wouldn't know for sure who's going to be playing. It probably should have been 8 points per round.

Since the next round hasn't started, I'm making an executive decision to implement those changes - 4 points per pick to advance to the finals, and 8 points for picking the champion. Sorry to snatch away your guaranteed victory, Patsy, but I figure this is more fair, and keeps things more interesting. x) You're still at an advantage, though - I believe the only way Umbra wins is if UNC becomes champion by beating both Oregon and the winner of Gonzaga - S. Carolina.

ha, I have no stake in this matter. SC can take Charlotte, but we'll take the national championship, tyvm.

To resolve our tie for bragging rights, Kiri and I will contest each other with predictions for the final score difference in the championship game.

Kiri: Gonzaga wins by 3
Ig: Gonzaga wins by 2

I was asleep for it, but I heard that the end of UNC/Gonzaga was a foul fiesta. Nearly unwatchable

I only managed to catch the last minute on a work break, but it didn't seem too foul-heavy at that point. It doesn't seem that either team played spectacularly throughout that game though, heh.

Congrats to Umbra on eking out the victory! Bad art coming your way soon. xD And thanks to everyone for participating! I had fun. ^^

Congrats to Umbro and Patsy on some pretty rad predictions! And thanks, Iggy, for organizing.

I predicted my own school's team to lose, lol. It was all part of my plan to help us win the national championship.
