#82751 Goodbye Introductions

I'm Ignatius, and new to roleplaying and using forums, so I have a lot to learn. But Golden Sun is the bom-best video game series ever (even if you include Dark Dawn, which was a minor disappointment), so here I am.

I'm in my fifth year of university, having gone through various majors, from astrophysics to classics to history only to end up in chemistry, which I plan to use to various environmental ends to better the world.

So naturally, Ignatius is a big Alchemy nerd, and he's a Mars Adept who occasionally loses his temper and sets silly humans on fire.
I have indeed learned much about roleplaying and forum use, starting with advice from Deltan that amounted to, "Dude, that roleplay you just posted in was obviously dead a long time ago."

I have also mastered emoticons. There was a world of learning to do there, complete with detailed records from several Refugians, and including the Kirictionary. Learning her language was an important first step. :P

There's still more for me to learn on forum-ing though; I need to work on condensing and reorganizing my ideas into more readable bites.

I'm not sure what "bom-best" was about; must have been my word of the month or something...but Golden Sun is still pretty much my favourite series ever. Thanks to everyone here for helping keep the feels alive!

I have since completed my chemistry degree, and recently got my first job in a lab, although I'm just a quality assurance technician, and hardly doing anything towards "various environmental ends to better the world." That's still the ideal, but I'm not as focused on that as I once was. The struggle to ensure a healthy planet for the future can be supported by science, but I've come to see the problem more and more as being to do with human tendencies and mindsets, rather than a lack of scientific advancement. I don't think humans are adapting quickly enough to the negative aspects that come along with the changes we're imposing on the world, changes which are becoming more impactful while our moral mindsets and policies don't keep pace. It's hard for me to see that as a winning game in the long run, which kills some of my drive to fight the good fight. And I simply don't have the skillset to make any significant inroads on solving the human aspect of that problem. Another reason why I'm less focused on it now is because I have a better idea now what I need in order to keep myself content and healthy. It would be cool if I eventually found a 9-5 job where I feel I'm making a difference and it's in a geographical area that works for my relationship, but I don't see a research-based job like I once envisioned working very well for me, because I'd always be bringing the work home. I also don't feel as intelligent as I once did; my memory's gotten kind of bad. So, I'm probably just joining ranks with the selfish human beings I vowed I'd never join who are so focused on their own happiness that everything else falls apart around them, which pretty much sums up the human aspect of the climate change problem. The internal struggle for reconciliation continues. ^^;

I'm not sure why those character details "naturally" followed from my career aims, but I think Ignatius turned out to be more of a cool cucumber type than a hothead...

Relatively finalized

Wulfgar Centaurkiller Katho-Vaikanu

  but with less armour

Class & Level: Barbarian (Path of the Zealot), 3
Age: 20
Background: Outlander
Race: Goliath
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Appearance: 7'8", 300lbs, bald, tattooed
Weapon of choice: Greatsword

Deity: Mars

STR: 18
DEX: 15
CON: 16
INT: 6
WIS: 16
CHA: 9

Personality Traits:
  • Competitive
  • Prefers being in the wilderness as opposed to in a city
Ideals:
  • Change. Adapt or die. (Chaotic)
  • Glory. I must earn glory through battle and looting, for myself and my Goliath tribe. (Neutral)
Bonds:
  • I aim to return to my dwindling Goliath tribe stronger and more experienced, to try and help guide it safely to the future
Flaws:
  • Reckless - no room for caution in a life lived to the fullest
  • Violence is my answer to most challenges
Interests: Fighting, looting, adventuring, eating

Bio: Recently left his frigid, mountainous homelands in search of more populated areas with new experiences to be had, as well as greater treasure and riches. The latter is an interest which has gradually alienated him from his Goliath tribe, who prize self-sufficiency to the degree that ‘excessive’ material wealth and reliance on strong equipment are seen as crutches. But Wulfgar feels that view is too narrow-minded, especially since the tribe has begun to dwindle in the face of external threats. He hopes to explore the world and eventually return to his struggling tribe more experienced and powerful than ever (bolstered by sweet loot) to try and help guide them towards survival.

Soon after leaving his home, Wulfgar joined the ranks of the Emerald Enclave.

None of the info in the application is meant to be for your character, but instead it's for my sake.

View PostRolina, on 25 April 2018 - 09:15 AM, said:

Remember that this application is not your character profile or bio.  It's not meant for you or the other players, but for me as the GM
what the what

The application may not be the character bio, but it literally contains a required field called Character Bio. My application contains 99% of the information I know about my character, and is the only written version of that info I have. This is a public thread that all the players are reading, and you're encouraging us to help each other with our characters to build a team. This thread is the only source of info I have to refer to about my character and his teammates. If the info were located elsewhere, I wouldn't refer to it anyways, because I already have it all in one handy place in this thread. So how/why is the info in the application about my character not "for" my character, for me, or for the players I'm trying to work with?

However, I do know certain things about this world, and if I bring one of those things up, I expect you to comply with the changes I request if you wish to be in the RP.  Things like psynergy being a skill everyone has, and a setup of languages that isn't based on race, especially when cultures in this world are going to be a lot more intermixed than in Tolkien-esque fantasy.
I didn't see anyone refusing to comply with your requests, and I'm not sure what attacks you're repeatedly defending your rights as GM against. It should go without saying that players can't play if they don't play by the rules. Having said that, it sounds like it's worth suggesting to you that you'll probably have better success attracting the number of players you want and keeping them engaged to the degree you want, the more your rules take their desires into account, rather than responding to everything with "because what I say goes."

View PostRolina, on 25 April 2018 - 09:15 AM, said:

When I ask for what you do or don't want to see, I mean in the story - this isn't a place to make passive aggressive remarks at the expense of the GM.
As explained to you in private chat, I interpret "the roleplay" as including in-character and out-of-character stuff, especially since both aspects can either help or hinder enjoyment, and there was no passive aggression in my words. I provided an honest answer I believe would be helpful for everyone to keep in mind - yes, especially you, given your history, but everyone nonetheless - in order to meet the goal we all share of enjoying the roleplay. To try and help guide this community in that healthy direction, I will make such comments where I deem fit.

To finish, a suggestion:

View PostRolina, on 25 April 2018 - 09:15 AM, said:

Who are they?  Were they killed by a specific person or event?  These are things I can use to create plot elements involving your character, such as them finding out about their family and what happened to them, and creating a plot thread for your character to investigate or hunt down the person/group that did it, etc.

I create things based on info you provide - it's a style of GMing I've grown fond of, because it gets the players more invested.
(That's from your original post, but is basically an echo of what you're saying in the new one)

I understand what you're trying to do. I recommend considering a tweak to your methodology of getting characters to provide "knives" for you to twist to engage them - how about, if you provide a list of, say, seven "knife" questions in the application, requiring players to fill in a minimum of four or five?

I'm reluctant to provide details about Torecius's family because Torecius's family is not really important to Torecius, and so I, the player am not as invested in plots about his family as I am in plots about the other elements I've specifically identified in my character's application - pursuing artifacts, working towards the greater good, dealing with the Claws, stuff involving his "bonds", Kargu, Gianna Vysilio and Harlan. If at some point I felt his character could benefit from some plot involving his family, I would like to have the freedom to fill in those blanks, organically - not forced to make something up on the spot, or worse, spend time making something up legitimate, that I don't really want to see in the roleplay anytime soon. You might respond that I could just put that under "what I don't want to see in the RP" if I don't want you to use it, and if that is your response, my answer is "I could, but I think that's a waste of both of our times when we could just skip creating it in the first place and focus on more important things." I really think it would be good for everyone if roleplayers had a bit more freedom in choosing their knives.

Requires suitable materials, time and working environment.
Enchanting - Torecius's true talents in creating useful equipment lie in using his powerful Psynergy in combination with knowledge of Alchemy and nature to imbue them with various hidden strengths which may amplify their users' powers or resiliencies, or grant them additional abilities. Requires suitable materials and time, and is preferably done at the same time the item is crafted.

Kargu, a hermit craftsman who taught him Vesylani crafting and enchanting
Gianna Vysilio, patroness of Harlan’s studies, and who has purchased Torecius’s crafting and enchanting skills on several occasions

Character Flaw:
Occasionally too dismissive of the short-term effects of his decisions, which can result, among other things, in a lack of courtesy.
Can be a bit egotistical.

Character Bio:
Abandoned near the Misaka Forest as a young child, Torecius was found by a traveling human, a scholarly Venus Adept named Harlan who soon recognized his Psynergetic aptitude, and eventually took him in. The relatively wealthy Harlan would have a house built for them in the nearby town of Misaka, from which they would make daily excursions to the forest for Torecius to hone control of his initially wild and dangerous acidic and caustic Psynergy, under the tutelage of Harlan, who conducted studies of natural phenomena in the area. After that time, his mentor resumed travels to study in various other places, taking Torecius along, teaching him to read, write and do arithmetic, and schooling him rigourously in Alchemy and Psynergy, both for which Torecius developed a passion. As they traveled throughout the lands, he picked up some herbology and potion-making, and developed an appreciation for study of the natural world.

Torecius learned quickly and soon became a skilled Lunar Mars Adept, but believed that he would learn faster if forced to rely more on himself, and as such, parted ways with Harlan to strike out on his own and further his studies and training. He gradually developed an interest in powerful and rare artifacts, and began to devote time to seeking them out for study. A year later, near the trading town of Sirana, he came upon an Orcish hermit craftsman named Kargu, a Vesylani, part of an ancient order of craftsmen renowned for their skill in enchantment. The persistent Torecius eventually wore down the stubborn hermit and convinced him to share his knowledge. After learning the fundamentals of creating weapons and armour, Torecius discovered that his mastery of Psynergy and knowledge of Alchemy afforded him a great advantage in imbuing items with hidden powers. He took to enchantments naturally, returning frequently to Kargu over the next several years to learn new techniques, in between honing his Psynergy and seeking out artifacts. Torecius now occasionally hires out his craftsmanship and enchanting, with Harlan’s patroness, the wealthy Gianna Vysilio being a frequent customer, but he lives a lifestyle more frugal than most, preferring to gather knowledge over wealth.

Recently, finding himself without the necessary resources to pursue a few intriguing artifacts, Torecius joined up with a band of Adepts for hire, calling themselves the Crimson Claws, in order to help him seek out the items. Focused on studying the artifacts, he performed some deeds during his year with the mercenaries that he would have once shunned as distasteful, but eventually philosophical differences led to a violent dispute with the rest of the Claws from which Torecius barely managed to escape, though this left the powerful artifact as well as his own enchanted staff in the hands of Claw leader Dorza, a Dwarven Mercury Adept.

Most Important Event: Growing up under the wing of Harlan. While grateful to and respectful of the man who took him in, through exposure to Harlan's lifestyle as one of the "haves" of society, and all of the various sidetracks from his studies that came with that, Torecius gradually developed an aversion to such aspects of his upbringing, which played an important role in his developing personality and ideals.

Character's Family: Mother and father, both dead (status unknown to character)

Does this character have any rivals? If so, who? He sees Harlan and Kargu as friendly rivals in a way, wishing to surpass his former mentor’s Psynergetic mastery, and to become a stronger enchanter, if not craftsman, than Kargu.

Does this character have any enemies? If so, who?
The Crimson Claws, a band of thugs and mercenaries. Led by the Dwarven Mercury Adept Dorza, they betrayed Torecius and now hold a powerful artifact which Torecius wishes to study, as well as his enchanted staff.

If the character is part of an organization, does it have any enemies? If so, who?
No organizations; his affiliation with the Vesylani is not official, as he’s never been formally initiated into their ranks.

What are you, the roleplayer, looking for in this RP?
Willingness to write inactive players' characters out of the story (both by the inactives themselves and the GM). Letting an RP die due to an inactive player doesn't make sense to me when there are other active players who've invested time and effort in it.

What do you, the roleplayer, specifically seek to avoid in this RP?
Getting overburdened or restricted by rules and mechanics.
Disagreements getting out of hand.

Welcome to the Refuge, Carn! I like what I've seen from you so far, and look forward to seeing more.

I recently started doing (chemical) quality assurance work, which I'm enjoying, overall. My free time is pretty chill, dedicated to some gaming - free online stuff, Yu-Gi-Oh and WoW at the moment - and watching various TV shows mostly.
